Founder: The Profile

Tell us about yourself, your company, and how you got it started.

In February of 2017, I launched The Profile as a vehicle for more interesting conversations with family and friends. The Profile is a weekly newsletter that features the stories of the world's most successful people & companies. I started by writing the newsletter on nights and weekends because I had a full time job at Fortune. I left my job in 2020 and started working on The Profile full time.

How did you acquire your first batch of customers?

I relentlessly promoted it on social media and did link swaps with like-minded newsletters.

Did your business pivot in the pandemic? Or, how did your business start during this time?

I quit my job at Fortune and started working on The Profile full-time on March 20, which was the first day of COVID lockdowns in New York City. I decided to make a new addition called The Profile Dossier, a weekly deep-dive on a successful individual which was available for premium members. I realized that people now had more time on their hands, and they were seeking high-quality content so I was ready to meet that need.

What is your plan for the future? What trends do you foresee for your industry?

I'd love to keep expanding The Profile and make it a membership that offers a suite of high-quality content for the readers. I think that people are losing trust in mainstream institutions and independent creators will be able to serve a niche of the population that's looking for high-quality, well-reported content they can learn from.

Any other lessons/advice you’d like to share with other fellow entrepreneurs?

Consistency plus time equals trust. No matter what your business is, you've got to be able to consistently deliver your product/service to your customer or user over a long period of time. The only way you can earn people's trust is by consistently keeping your word and delivering on what you've promised.
